Herrmann himself conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra on this collection of music from Citizen Kane, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Jane Eyre, and The Devil and Daniel Webster. The disc offers an excellent overview of his powers as both a gifted composer and a sensitive scorer of films. This is music that is more dramatic than cinematic: it shines with life and beauty rather than sounding like the backdrop to action, as most soundtracks do. Granted, he had some fine inspiration with some of the greatest films ever made, but that doesn't account for his mastery of the full range of emotion that these films covered. There is whimsy, pain, joy and soul in this music. If there is any justice, Herrmann will be recognized by future generations as one of the great American composers. The high-fidelity reissue of this disc offers an amazingly broad palette of sound, bringing out all the nuances of the orchestra.~All Music Guide
